The two interactive art installations Venetian Mirror and Exquisite Clock were selected to be part of the V&A’s exhibition “Decode: Digital Design Sensations”, from 8 December 2009 to 11 April 2010. Decode is a major survey of the best contemporary digital art and design from around the world curated by the prestigious London institution and the leading digital arts organization onedotzero.

VENETIAN MIRROR is a large scale interactive installation blending contemporary digital technology with traditional Venetian glass. When the visitor walks up to the installation, their image doesn’t immediately appear in the mirror. Only if they keep very still, will the reflection slowly appear, like a photograph being developed. This installation invites the audience to reflect on the mystery of time itself and on the sense of oneself and one’s body.

EXQUISITE CLOCK is a clock made of numbers taken from everyday life – seen, captured and uploaded on the website by people from all over the world. The project connects time, play and visual aesthetics. Through the website www.exquisiteclock.org, users are invited to collect and upload images of numbers that can be found in different contexts and to participate in a global conversation about the poetics of the images. Exquisite Clock has also been developed as iPhone application.

The inclusion of Venetian Mirror and Exquisite Clock in this major exhibition is the recognition of Fabrica’s role in exploring new approaches to the creative use of technology, and puts the creative laboratory of Benetton firmly at the centre of the most exciting, innovative and creative developments taking place in the arts and design today.

Decode also features the work of two well known artists who have taken their first steps at Fabrica: We Feel Fine by Jonathan Harris was first shown in ‘I’ve Been Waiting for You’, a Fabrica group show of interactive and relational art at the Triad, Seoul as part of the Seoul Biennale in 2006. The Replenishing Body by Ross Phillips is an award winning interactive video installation in which the viewer is invited to put themselves into the picture. An earlier version of this work titled ‘VideoGrid’ was part of the Fabrica show DARE at the Museum of the Moving Image, New York in 2003.

C. and J. Clark Ltd, or probably better known as ‘Clarks‘, are not what you would expect as typical We Heart material… there is no doubting the world famous footwear giant’s history, yet safe and, well, bland, are possibly the nicest words we could attribute to their… erm, style. Accordingly, it was to our surprise that Royal College of Art graduates, Sophie Nielsen and Rolf Knudsen – aka Roso, a multidisciplinary design studio deeply rooted in art, design and architecture – had been commissioned to design an inspirational art installation at Clarks’ Somerset headquarters. Based around the singular concept that “light is only seen when reflected”, Roso’s ‘Light’ explodes dramatically from the building, literally beaming across the space of the communal courtyard – the thousands of shiny discs, that are attached to suspending wires, casting light in each and every direction, creating a sublime vision as the reflect the colours of their surroundings and generate an almost computer generated pixel effect across the open space….

먼저 글로 인사 드립니다. 잘 부탁 드려요~~

지난 주 이번 주 모두 Multi tocuh panel에 대해 내부적으로, 외부적으로 논의가 많이 되었네요.
그래서 몇 가지 끄적여 봅니다.

전 개인적으로 이 Object (too or service)를 처음 들었을 때부터, 상용화에 대해 생각의 날을 세우고 있었습니다.
시작은 이렇습니다.

Multi touch(sense), play, media. 우리가 만드는 이것은 제품이며 동시에 서비스가 될 수 있다. 그렇다면 제품을 잘 만드는 것은 기본이고 좋은 서비스도 입혀져야 한다.
좋은 서비스는 well-branded가 우선일 것이고 그 다음은 contents가 되야 한다. 이것은 광고 마케팅으로 본다면
바로 concept으로 연계되겠죠.

여기서 좀 더 jump를 해 보았습니다.

사용자(소비자)의 감각에 concept이 더해지면 어떤 변화가 혹은 output이 생길까? 바로 지각에 영향을 준다는 것이죠. 우리가 소구해야 될 point는 바로 이 부분일 것입니다.
High tech 기술이 바탕이 된 제품, 서비스가 선택을 받으려면 바로 지각에 영향을 주고 어떤 행동을 유발하게 만든다는 것을 강하게 부각하자는 것입니다.

바로 우리 일의 핵심인 BTL의 귀결점이 이것일 겁니다.
"소비자가 경험할 가치"를 주는 HIGH TECH DEVICE. 우리가 생산해 내야 하는 것은 DEVICE를 시작으로 가치에 부합하는 idea겠죠.
이렇게 set 구성이 된다면 우리는 기획, 제작, 아이디어를 한 번에 생산하는 expert group이 될 것입니다.

일단 광고주는 혹은 소비자는 좋은 제품을 사는 경우도 있지만 좋아 보이는 제품을 살 때도 많습니다.

[이사람] 최은석 디스트릭트 대표 "美3D기술 좇기보다 홀로그램 시장에 관심을"

“영화 ‘아바타’의 흥행으로 3차원(3D)에 대한 관심이 폭발적입니다. 이런 시기, 우리나라는 안경을 쓰고 보는 미국 할리우드의 3D 기술을 따라가기 보단 한발 앞선 홀로그램 시장에 관심을 가져야 합니다.”

최은석 디스트릭트 사장(38)은 요즘 홀로그램 입체영상을 이용한 대규모 전시행사와 예술공연을 성공시켜 커다란 사회적 관심을 끌고 있다. 그는 지난 2004년 광고미디어와 IT 결합을 통해서 세상을 뒤흔들겠다는 야무진 꿈을 갖고 회사를 설립했다. 전자광고판(DID)도 흔치 않던 시기에 홀로그램을 이용한 입체전시관을 만든다는 그의 계획은 너무도 무모했다.

“홀로그램은 누구도 해본 적이 없는 차세대 영상 분야라서 어려움이 많았습니다. 작은 기업이라고 기술력을 믿어주지도 않을 때는 서운하더군요.”

그는 고군분투하면서 홀로그램 분야의 설비기술과 콘텐츠 제작 노하우를 조금씩 쌓아갔다. 어느날 큰 기회가 왔다. 삼성전자가 신형 휴대폰 출시 행사를 준비하면서 홀로그램 기반의 프레젠테이션 전문업체를 찾는다며 연락이 온 것이다. 3D 홀로그램 기술을 선보인 삼성전자의 휴대폰 출시 행사는 유럽시장에서 큰 파장을 일으켰고 홀로그램 기반의 입체 쇼를 요구하는 문의전화가 밀려들었다. 최 사장은 새해에는 스마트폰과 PC, TV영상을 하나로 연결하는 차세대 영상 소프트웨어(SW)로 사람들을 또 한번 놀라게 할 예정이다.

“새해 IT시장을 선도할 스마트폰은 액정크기가 작은 것이 단점입니다. 만약 스마트폰의 아이콘을 손가락으로 드래그해서 가까운 PC, TV로 이미지가 밀려간다면 편리하지 않을까요. 작은 스마트폰에서 수행할 작업을 옆에 있는 커다란 멀티 터치 모니터 위에서 하는 거죠.”

그는 PC와 휴대폰, TV, 건물벽을 하나의 캔버스처럼 활용하는 놀라운 IT세상을 꿈꾸고 있다. 휴대폰 게임 속의 주인공이 갑자기 평면 TV속으로 옮겨가서 악당들을 물리치는 상황도 가능해진다. 이러한 환경은 새해 출시될 안드로이드폰에 디스트릭트가 개발한 영상SW를 깔면 쉽게 구현이 된다.

“미디어 간의 장벽이 사라지는 융합시대는 기술과 아이디어만으로 세계시장을 선도할 수 있습니다. 미개척 시장인 홀로그램이 그 대표적 사례라고 생각합니다.”

최 사장은 홀로그램과 실제 사물놀이 공연을 결합한 4D 아트도 성공하면서 지칠 줄 모르는 창의성을 쏟아내고 있다. 디스트릭트의 궁극적 비전을 묻자 그는 마법사 같은 미소를 지으며 말했다.

“디지털 시대에 가장 앞서 가는 창조적이고 예술적인 기업을 만들고 싶습니다.”

이미지를 척척 옮긴다. 2054년이 영화 속 무대다.

공상과학 영화의 삶이 현실로 성큼 다가왔다. 지난주 미국 라스베이거스에서 열린
‘CES 2010’의 화두는 3차원(3D) 영상이었다. 3D 기술 덕분에 TV, 컴퓨터 등
전자기기에서 제스처 시대가 열리면서 이른바 ‘제스처 혁명’이 시작됐다.

마이크로소프트(MS), 히타치 등 유수의 PC 및 가전업체들이 멀찌감치 소파에 앉아
손동작만으로 TV 채널을 돌리고, 컴퓨터 화면을 움직이는 제품을 선뵐 예정이라고
뉴욕타임스(NYT)가 12일(현지시간) 전했다.

MS가 ‘나탈(Natal) 프로젝트’로 명명한 새 비디오 게임을 내놓을 연말쯤이면
제스처 시대는 궤도에 오를 전망이다. 나탈 프로젝트는 일본 닌텐도의 비디오 게임기
‘위(Wii)’에 맞설 MS의 야심작이다. 위는 손으로 작동하는 컨트롤러가
있어야 하지만 나탈은 칩을 부착한 손 자체가 컨트롤러다.

나탈 시스템에 기술 공급을 위한 3파전이 한창이다. 제스처 인식 기술 개발에 미국의
‘제스처테크’와 ‘캐네스타’, 이스라엘의 ‘프라임센스’가 뛰어들었다.
일본 전자업체 히타치도 제스처만으로 멀리서 작동시킬 수 있는 TV를 준비 중이다.
내장 카메라로 제스처 인식이 가능한 노트북 등도 연말쯤 시판된다.

제 스처 시대 정착은 전자기기에 내장된 소형 디지털카메라가 사람의 제스처 의도를
얼마나 정확히 판독하느냐에 달렸다. 코를 긁으려고 손을 올린 건지, 명령을 하는
건지를 간파해야 한다. 3D 기술 출현은 제스처 시대 전망을 밝게 한다.
리모컨과 터치스크린이 쓰레기통에 던져지는 시대가 머지않았다.
